Next Verse

For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.

Note 2 at 1 Cor. 2:2: The preceding verse that describes Paul's lack of oratory skills might lead some people to believe that he was inept at speaking. But in this verse, he makes a clear statement that his simple sermons were by design.

Paul determined beforehand to limit his preaching to the message of Christ and what He accomplished for us through His death on the cross. Paul purposed to keep it simple and let the power of God do the persuading rather than his words. The men who have made the greatest impact on the world through their ministries are those who minister very simple messages.

Some of the pseudo-intellectuals of our day think that it is a sign of superior intellect to use speech that the average person can't understand. But actually, it is a very intelligent person who talks in terms that even the simplest person can understand. Speech is supposed to communicate. If the people listening are not understanding, then the speaker is not a good communicator, regardless of how dazzling his intellect. Simplicity is profound!
