Next Verse |
Neither be ye idolaters, as [were] some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.
Note 6 at 1 Cor. 10:7: The Israelites who came out of Egypt worshiped physical idols of gold (Ex. 32:1-5). Yet, the portion of this passage which Paul chose to quote refers to the people eating and drinking and rising up to play (Ex. 32:6). Idolatry is more than just the worshiping of some image. Paul said that covetousness was idolatry (Col. 3:5), and in this instance, he cites uncontrolled sensual pleasure as idolatry.
