Next Verse |
Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer.
Note 9 at 1 Cor. 10:10: The only time that the term "destroyer" was applied to any being was in Ex. 12:23; "For the LORD will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when he seeth the blood upon the lintel, and on the two side posts, the LORD will pass over the door, and will not suffer the destroyer to come in unto your houses to smite you." This was not a name but a descriptive term used to refer to the angel who killed the first born of Egypt.
Two other times in scripture, the Lord speaks of godly angels destroying (2 Sam. 24:16; 1 Chron. 21:15). There are many scriptural examples of angels destroying people which don't use that word but describe the act (examples:
2 Ki. 19:35; Mt. 13:41-42; Acts 12:23; 2 Th. 1:7-8; Heb. 11:28; Rev. 15:1; 16:1).
Here Paul is attributing this same term to the angel who executed many of the plagues on the Israelites during their time in the wilderness (see ref. g at this verse). This could possibly make the angel who executed God's plagues in the wilderness the same one as the angel who smote the first born of Egypt (Ex. 12:29).
