Next Verse |
For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come.
Note 4 at 1Co 11:26: The Lord's Supper came from a part of the Passover meal (see note 3 at Lu 22:16), which was celebrated only once each year. However, the early Christian church took communion weekly (Ac 20:7) and sometimes daily (Ac 2:46). There is no frequency of the Lord's Supper prescribed in Scripture.
Note 5 at 1Co 11:26: According to Fritz Rienecker's "Linguistic Key to the Greek New Testament," the Greek word "KATAGGELLO," translated "shew" here, "is used in the sense of making a solemn announcement by word of mouth." So, as we take communion, we are solemnly proclaiming the Lord's death and our union with Him through that death. This is a profession of our faith, and therefore, there are serious consequences for those who profess something they don't possess (see note 7 at 1Co 11:27).
