Next Verse |
But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.
Note 13 at 1 Cor. 11:32: The "we" of verse 32 and the "we" of verse 31 are two different groups of people. In verse 31, Paul is speaking of any person (Christian or non-Christian) who will admit his sinfulness and accept salvation through faith in Christ. He will not be judged (see note 12 at v. 31).
Here in verse 32, Paul is speaking of a Christian. When Christians are judged, it is not the kind of judgment that unbelievers receive to damnation. Instead, we are chastened. Chastening differs from punishment in that it is always done for the purpose of correction and not vengeance.
