Note 21 at 1 Cor. 14:33: This scripture is saying that God is the author of peace and the God of peace (Rom. 15:33; 16:20; 1 Cor. 14:33; Phil. 4:9; 1 Th. 5:23; Heb. 13:20). The Greek word translated "peace" in this passage is "eirene" and occurs 92 times in the King James Version.

"In the Septuagint 'eirene' is almost invariably used to translate the Hebrew 'salom' which occurs more than 250 times in the Old Testament. . .throughout the Hebrew Old Testament, 'salom' covers well-being in the widest sense of the word; prosperity (Ps. 73:3); bodily health (Isa. 57:18; Ps. 38:3); salvation (Isa. 43:7); etc. . .In some 15 passages 'eirene' corresponds to various other Hebrew words which embrace the general area of meaning of rest, safety, freedom from care and trustfulness. . .The well-being that comes from God is. . .regularly expressed by 'eirene'" (TDNT, Vol. 2, p. 402).

"In the New Testament 'eirene' is described as the peace of Christ (Col. 3:15) and as the gift of the Father and the Son (Rom. 1:7; 1 Cor. 1:3). It is both obtained and maintained through communion with Christ (Jn. 16:33; Phil. 4:7; 1 Pet. 5:14)" (DNTT, Vol. 2, pp. 777,781; Editor: Colin Brown).
