1 Corinthians 14:40
Next Verse

Let all things be done decently and in order.

Note 30 at 1 Cor. 14:40: Paul is using the Greek word "euschemonos" (decently) to mean "in a seemly manner" or "decently." He uses "taxis" (order) to mean "according to order" or "orderly." Other uses of this word have been "not disorderly" and "in turn" (Josephus). Paul's use of this word suggests the idea of members of the church doing things one at a time, not all at once.

Paul is stating that orderly worship is a must. God is the God of order, not confusion, as shown from 1 Corinthians 11:2-10, 17-34; 14:26-33, 37-40; Colossians 2:5; Titus 1:5 (see note 11 at 1 Cor. 14:27, p. 950).
