1 Corinthians 15:12 |
Next Verse |
Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead?
Note 1 at 1 Cor. 15:12: It was amazing to Paul that those who had heard the resurrection preached would reject such a doctrine. Likewise today, it's amazing that people would turn away from such a comforting truth which fills our lives with hope. The only people that no resurrection would appeal to are those who are fearful of punishment if there is a resurrection and we have to give an account of our actions. This fear is always the motivating factor behind those who oppose the resurrection. If there is no eternity, then they can live like animals because there will be no eternal damnation. Such is not the case.
Note 2 at 1 Cor. 15:12: First Corinthians 15 provides us with much of our scriptural knowledge about our physical body and our resurrected body. In this chapter, Paul states that the physical body is natural (v. 44), earthy, i.e. flesh and blood (v. 50), terrestrial (vv. 40, 49), corruptible (vv. 42, 53, 54), sown in dishonour (v. 43), sown in weakness (v. 43), mortal (vv. 53-54; Rom. 8:11), and soulish (v. 45). He also said in Philippians 3:21 it is vile, i.e. the body of our humiliation.
Through the resurrection it is said to be redeemed (Rom. 8:23), quickened, i.e. made alive (Rom. 8:11), fashioned (Phil. 3:21), changed (v. 51; Phil. 3:21), put on (vv. 53, 54), raised (v. 44), spiritual (v. 44), heavenly (v. 49), celestial (vv. 40, 49), incorruptible (vv. 42, 53, 54), powerful (v. 43), immortal (vv. 53-54), and a glorious body (v. 51; Phil. 3:21).
