Note 6 at 1 Cor. 16:3: This is probably where churches got the custom of writing letters transferring an individual's membership from one church to another. This is not exactly what was happening here. These were letters of recommendation for individuals who would be entrusted with delivering this offering to the church at Jerusalem. However, this is a precedent for a church body to provide a letter which vouches for the integrity of an individual.
