1 Corinthians 16:15
Previous Verse Next Verse

I beseech you, brethren, (ye know the house of Stephanas, that it is the firstfruits of Achaia, and [that] they have addicted themselves to the ministry of the saints,)

Note 1 at 1Co 16:15: By comparing this verse with Ro 16:5, it can be seen that Epaenetus was one of the members of Stephanas' household and was actually Paul's first convert in Achaia.

Note 2 at 1Co 16:15: Today the word "addiction" has a very negative connotation because we only speak of being addicted to bad things like drugs or alcohol. However, this verse is speaking of a positive addiction. We can become addicted to good things like serving others, studying God's Word, etc. We can take our capacity for addiction and direct it toward the things of God. Just as with physical addictions, we won't become addicted instantly, but repeated positive actions will become addictive.

Note 3 at 1Co 16:15: Some people are so evangelistically minded that they feel people shouldn't occupy themselves with the ministry to the saints as long as there are still those who haven't heard the Gospel. Paul didn't feel that way. It is important to minister to the saints. In fact, we have an obligation to do so, just as parents have a responsibility to provide for their children.

If Christians were ministered to more, so that they were all healthy and equipped to minister to others, then the evangelistic work wouldn't have to be left to just a few members of the body of Christ. Everyone would be doing the work of an evangelist (2Ti 4:5), and the lost would be reached more quickly (see note 3 at Joh 13:35).
