Previous Verse
1 Timothy 1:10
Next Verse

For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;

Note 22 at 1 Tim. 1:10: The Greek word PORNOS which was translated "whoremongers" literally means "a male prostitute" (Thayer's).

Note 23 at 1 Tim. 1:10: "For them that defile themselves with mankind" means one who lies with a man as with a woman, that is, a sodomite or homosexual (see note 4 at 1 Cor. 6:9, p. 886). The NIV translates this verse as "for adulterers and perverts, for slave traders and liars and perjurers-and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine."

Note 24 at 1 Tim. 1:10: "Menstealers" is referring to one who unjustly reduces men to slavery, such as a slave-dealer or kidnapper. This violates the eighth commandment (Ex. 20:15).

Note 25 at 1 Tim. 1:10: "Perjured persons" are those who make untrue declarations or testify falsely under oath. This violates the ninth commandment (Ex.20:16).

Note 26 at 1 Tim. 1:10: Paul finishes his list with a general statement that would entail any behavior in conflict with sound doctrine (or healthy teaching). The ruler or measurement of sound teaching must always be the written Word of God.
