And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being [found] blameless.
Note 8 at 1 Tim. 3:10: "And let these also first be proved" is in the present imperative tense in the Greek and indicates an ongoing test and evaluation of character and service. This evaluation also applies to elders (1 Tim. 3:1-7). This is saying that they must maintain these qualities.
The Wuest's Word Studies in the Greek New Testament, Volume 2, pages 60-61 says that this word "proved" is not referring to a formal examination, but rather the general judgment of the Christian community. Deacons must be generally perceived as godly people.
Note 9 at 1 Tim. 3:10: There is a difference between being blameless (as required here), and sinless. Everyone sins or makes mistakes, but a person who is blameless is diligently seeking to be godly and is quick to repent when in error. See the list of footnotes on the word "blameless" at this verse.
