For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.
Note 15 at 1 Tim. 3:13: The office of a deacon is not held in very high regard by most Christians today. That is because the typical deacon today is not like the deacon of the Bible, and because servanthood is not highly esteemed in our modern society.
If the seven men selected in Acts 6 were deacons (see note 1 at 1 Tim. 3:8, p. 1282), then we can see that deacons were powerful men. Stephen confounded the Jewish religious leaders and infuriated them to the point that they stoned him to death (Acts 7). He became the first martyr of the followers of Jesus, and our Lord Himself honored Stephen by standing at the Father's right hand. Philip was also an evangelist and saw a mighty move of God in Samaria (Acts 8:5-13). He was also used of the Lord to minister to the Ethiopian eunuch (Acts 8:26-38). Philip was also translated (Acts 8:39-40).
Deacons are primarily servants in physical matters whereas bishops or pastors are servants in spiritual matters. Our society doesn't place much emphasis on servant positions. Everyone wants to be the top dog. This is the opposite of what Jesus taught (see note 1 at Lk. 9:46, p.274).
With the Lord there is great reward for selflessly serving others. This is the function of a deacon, and God promises great rewards to those who carry out their duties well.
Note 16 at 1 Tim. 3:13: Those who carry out the office of a deacon well, gain two main things in this life. First, they "purchase to themselves a good degree" and second, they gain "great boldness in the faith."
The New International Version translates this first phrase as "gain an excellent standing." The Greek word that was translated "degree" here is BATHMOS which means "a step, i.e., (figuratively) grade of dignity" (Strong). This is speaking of gaining the respect of people. Notice that the word "purchase" is used in this phrase. We can't purchase anything from God, but with men respect has to be earned.
Second, they gain "great boldness in the faith." This is speaking of their faith producing much confidence and assurance. Serving others takes great faith. As deacons fulfill their office they use their faith daily; therefore, they see it increase through use. They become strong in faith.
Stephen and Philip are two examples of deacons (see note 1 at 1 Tim. 3:8, p. 1282) who may have seen their faith increase through executing the office of a deacon, which propelled them further into ministry (see note 15 at this verse).
