Next Verse |
These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly:
Note 1 at 1 Tim. 3:14: The date and place of the writing of this letter to Timothy are not certain. Much of the uncertainty revolves around whether Paul was imprisoned in Rome once or twice.
The subscript at the end of 2 Timothy says that this letter was written when Paul was brought before Nero the second time. Some have interpreted this as saying that Paul was released from his imprisonment in Rome and traveled for awhile before being incarcerated again. The subscript at the end of this first letter to Timothy says it was written from Laodica, for which there is no scriptural account of Paul visiting that city. Therefore, some think this further supports the idea that Paul was released from prison in Rome and traveled through Asia again. However, the subscripts are questionable as to their authority.
This verse and Paul's statement about him hoping to come to see Timothy shortly, would lend itself to the interpretation that Paul was released from his Roman imprisonment and traveled through Asia one more time. See THE INTRODUCTION TO THE FIRST AND SECOND EPISTLES OF PAUL TO TIMOTHY, page 1260.
