Next Verse

Well reported of for good works; if she have brought up children, if she have lodged strangers, if she have washed the saints' feet, if she have relieved the afflicted, if she have diligently followed every good work.

Note 27 at 1 Tim. 5:10: The NIV translates this verse as, "and is well known for her good deeds, such as bringing up children, showing hospitality, washing the feet of the saints, helping those in trouble and devoting herself to all kinds of good deeds." This is not a list of things the widow must have done, but is a list of the types of things that a godly widow did. Failure to comply on one point, such as raising children, would not disqualify a widow.
