Next Verse

Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and [his] doctrine be not blasphemed.

Note 1 at 1 Tim. 6:1: The word "servants" is speaking about slaves (see ref. a on this word). The NIV translation says, "All who are under the yoke of slavery. . . ." Since slavery is not the issue today that it was 2000 years ago, we could substitute the words "employer" and "employee" or any position where one is under the authority of another (see note 10 at 1 Cor. 7:23, p. 894).

However, it is very important not to miss what Paul is saying here. He is talking to slaves about how to handle their situations. His instructions are totally radical from the way most people would advise a slave today, and demand our close attention (see note 3 at v. 2).

Note 2 at 1 Tim. 6:1: The reason Paul urges slaves to serve their masters well is so that they will present a good testimony to others. Most people today would say, "Who cares about any one else. I'm a slave. I want freedom." They would feel completely justified in being upset because of their situation. That was not Paul's attitude.

The correct Christian position is "what is best for the cause of Christ?" not "what is best for me?" Paul was willing to die if that would advance the cause of Christ (Phil. 1:12-21). Therefore, slaves should submit to slavery if that will advance the cause of Christ and we should gladly suffer persecution for the sake of the Gospel.
