1 Timothy 6:15
Next Verse

Which in his times he shall shew, [who is] the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;

Note 17 at 1 Tim. 6:15: "Which in his times he shall show" is a phrase that means that God will bring about Jesus' return in His own time (Acts 1:7). This refers to the statement that the exact time of the second coming of the Lord is unknown. Only the Father knows (Mk. 13:32). The Contemporary English Version renders this verse as, ". . .at the time that God has already decided. . . ."

Note 18 at 1 Tim. 6:15: Paul now breaks out in a doxology. God is first described as "the blessed and only Potentate." "Potentate" comes from the Latin word "POTENTATUS" and means "power." God is the only one who has the power and position to rule over others.

"King of kings and Lord of lords" is a title used for the Father here, but is applied to Christ in Revelation 17:14 and 19:16.

"Immortality" is a term that means "not subject to death and imperishable." God alone is immortal and we derive our immortal body at the resurrection from Him (1 Cor.15:53).

Next, we are told that God dwells "in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, or can see." Sinful man has never seen the fullness of God in His glory (Ex. 33:20).

Paul now ends this doxology by stating, "To Him be honor and power everlasting. Amen."
