Not for that we have dominion over your faith, but are helpers of your joy: for by faith ye stand.
Note 19 at 2 Cor. 1:24: Paul's statements about coming so that he could benefit them (v. 15) and his statement here about sparing them might lead some of his critics to say, "Who do you think you are? Do you think we can't make it without you?" Paul puts it all in balance in this verse.
Their faith had to be in God. Paul wasn't their head (1 Cor. 11:3), Christ was. Paul's part was simply a tool of the Lord that was there to help them experience the joy available in Christ.
