2 Corinthians 5:12
Next Verse

For we commend not ourselves again unto you, but give you occasion to glory on our behalf, that ye may have somewhat to [answer] them which glory in appearance, and not in heart.

Note 1 at 2 Cor. 5:12: Remember that Paul's authority had been challenged in the Corinthian church (see note 1 at 1 Cor. 4:9, p. 877; see note 9 at 1 Cor. 4:20, p. 880). One of the primary functions of both First and Second Corinthians was to deal with this issue (see "OVERVIEW" to both First and Second Corinthians, pp. 856 and 972). Paul is not trying to commend or recommend himself to the Corinthians, but rather he is trying to give them a base or foundation to glory or boast on his behalf, that is, to have something to answer them that boast about external, outward things rather than the inward reality of what is in one's heart.
