2 Corinthians 11:24
Previous Verse
2 Corinthians 11:24
Next Verse

Of the Jews five times received I forty [stripes] save one.

Note 10 at 2 Cor. 11:24: Scripture does not record these beatings for us (see note 7 at v. 23, above).

Note 11 at 2 Cor. 11:24: It was a Jewish form of punishment prescribed in Deuteronomy 25:1-3 to scourge with whips. Under no circumstances were more than 40 stripes to be administered. Therefore, the legalistic Jews always administered one stripe less than 40 just in case they made a mistake in counting. That's the reason for the terminology, "forty stripes save one."
