2 Corinthians 11:25
Previous Verse
2 Corinthians 11:25
Next Verse

Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep;

Note 12 at 2 Cor. 11:25: This beating with rods was a cruel process. Often it was done on the feet, resulting in broken bones. This was a Roman form of punishment and should not have happened to Paul since he was a Roman citizen (Acts 22:25-26).

Note 13 at 2 Cor. 11:25: Only one of Paul's shipwrecks is reported in the book of Acts (Acts 27:14-44). Just as with all the other persecutions Paul mentions in this chapter, he endured much more than the Acts account records.

Note 14 at 2 Cor. 11:25: This sounds like Paul is describing some time that he was adrift in the ocean for a night and a day. The shipwreck recorded in Acts 27 is the closest account we have to something like this. Yet, it doesn't seem to fit what Paul is describing here. Once again, we have to conclude that much of what Paul endured is not recorded in the book of Acts (see note 7 at v. 23, above).
