Greatly desiring to see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy;

Note 4 at 2 Tim. 1:4: Paul and Timothy both had tears (see ref. f), yet they both had great joy. There is a sorrow of this world that results in death, but there is a godly sorrow that causes repentance and spiritual growth (see note 15 at 2 Cor. 7:10, p. 1016). Paul and Timothy's tears were probably tears of compassion for others.

The acid test to determine whether our tears are productive or destructive, is to determine their cause. If it is centered on self, then our tears are detremental. Tears of repentance, when we are exalting God above self, and tears of compassion for others, are positive.
