2 Timothy 1:9
Previous Verse
2 Timothy 1:9
Next Verse

Who hath saved us, and called [us] with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,

Note 15 at 2 Tim. 1:9: Paul isn't just demanding Timothy to suffer persecution through gritted teeth. In this verse, he invokes God's love for us as demonstrated through the things Christ suffered, as a reminder of the great sacrifice that was made for us. By reminding ourselves of how much Christ gave up for us, we will be able to make sacrifices for Him.

Note 16 at 2 Tim. 1:9: The wording of Paul's statements makes it clear that we are not only called to have our sins forgiven, but after our born again experiences (see note 2 at Jn. 3:3, p. 92), we have a call on our lives.

Note 17 at 2 Tim. 1:9: Paul is reminding Timothy that God saved him for a specific purpose. It wasn't only for Timothy's individual salvation, but the Lord had a plan for Timothy's life. If he was to remain a slave to the Lord, Timothy really didn't have a choice in the matter. He should remain faithful to the Lord regardless of the costs.

It always helps us when facing persecution, to remember that our lives are not our own. We have been bought with a price and we are to glorify the Lord in everything we do (1 Cor. 6:19-20).

Note 18 at 2 Tim. 1:9: That God's purposes for our lives were given to us before the world began underscores that His purposes are not according to any works that we have done. God's will for our lives is a grace gift that was determined before the world began.
