Next Verse

The Lord give mercy unto the house of Onesiphorus; for he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain:

Note 36 at 2 Tim. 1:16: Onesiphorus is only mentioned in this verse and in 2 Timothy 4:19. Paul said that Onesiphorus often refreshed him. It is unclear whether this was speaking of some physical provision such as food or clothing, or if it was spiritual or emotional refreshment such as fellowship.

We know that Onesiphorus was an Asian from Ephesus (v. 18), who ministered to Paul often when he was there. Then when Onesiphorus came to Rome, he sought out Paul diligently (v. 17), implying that it took some effort on his part. Onesiphorus was not ashamed to be associated with the Apostle Paul. He put his own life at risk to make these provisions for Paul.

Onesiphorus lived up to his name which means "help bringer."
