2 Timothy 2:3
Next Verse

Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.

Note 9 at 2 Tim. 2:3: Just as in the first verse of this chapter, the word "therefore" ties Paul's statement in this verse to what he had just said (see note 1 at v. 1 p. 1320). Paul had just commanded Timothy to commit the things he had received from him to faithful men who would be able to teach others also (v. 2). Therefore, Timothy had to remain faithful through hardships if he expected those he trained to do so. We shouldn't expect of others what we don't expect of ourselves. Discipling isn't done through words as much as it is done through example.

Note 10 at 2 Tim. 2:3: Notice that the Apostle Paul told Timothy to endure hardness. There are some people who don't believe we have to suffer. It's true that God doesn't cause us to suffer, but there is an enemy who constantly fights us. Furthermore, this whole world system is perverted and therefore hostile. God doesn't send it, but suffering will come.

Those who think that faith in Jesus will exempt them from suffering are in for a shock. There is additional suffering for true believers because all those "who will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution" (see note at 2 Tim. 3:12).
