And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.
Note 11 at Acts 1:26: Casting of lots was a common practice in the Old Testament. The priests used lots to chose the scapegoat (Lev. 16:8) and to divide the promised land among the twelve tribes of Israel (Num. 26:55; Josh. 14:2).
Solomon wrote in Proverbs that, "The lot is cast into the lap; but the whole disposing thereof is of the LORD" (16:33) and, "The lot causeth contentions to cease, and parteth between the mighty" (18:18).
However, this is the last mention of casting of lots in the scripture. After the coming of the Holy Ghost, direction comes directly from God to the believer through the ministry of the Holy Spirit (Jn. 14:26; Jas. 1:5).
