And as they spake unto the people, the priests, and the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees, came upon them,

Note 1 at Acts 4:1: The Sadducees were one of the sects among the Jewish leadership, the other dominant one being the Pharisees (see note 1 at Mt. 16:1, p. 255). The Sadducees did not believe in a bodily resurrection and that was the reason they were "sad, you see." Their hatred for the doctrine of the resurrection caused them to be the first group to bring persecution against the Christians.
