Acts 6:2
Next Verse

Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples [unto them], and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables.

Note 5 at Acts 6:2: In this communal system (see note 5 at Acts 2:44, p. 584), the church took the pooled resources of the believers and used them to supply food to the widows. The deacons were to take charge of this business. It is probable that their duties included all aspects of ministry to physical needs.
