Acts 7:14
Previous Verse
Acts 7:14
Next Verse

Then sent Joseph, and called his father Jacob to [him], and all his kindred, threescore and fifteen souls.

Note 4 at Acts 7:14: In Genesis 46:26, it is stated that there were 66 males that came with Jacob into Egypt. This number is excluding Jacob himself and Joseph and his two sons who were already in Egypt. Therefore, adding these four, Genesis 46:27 brings the total male Israelites who came into Egypt to 70 (Dt. 10:22). That makes Stephen's count five more than the count of Genesis 46:27.

It is probable that Stephen was quoting from the Septuagint (a Greek translation of the Hebrew scriptures) which adds the four sons of Manasseh and Ephraim and one grandson of Manasseh (Num. 26:29, 35) to the list of Genesis 46:20. Therefore, there were 70 male Israelites, excluding Ephraim's sons, and Manasseh's son and grandson, and 75 including them.
