And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.

Note 11 at Acts 22:16: Water baptism does not produce forgiveness of sins (see ref. jj at this verse). This is referring to the cleansing of our conscience that comes through obeying the Lord's commands. That is what Peter spoke of in I Peter 3:21, "the like figure whereunto [even] baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ."
