Acts 22:28
Next Verse

And the chief captain answered, With a great sum obtained I this freedom. And Paul said, But I was [free] born.

Note 2 at Acts 22:28: Paul was born in Tarsus (see note 3 at Acts 9:11, p. 624) of Cilicia (see note 5 at Acts 6:9, p. 602). Tarsus and all it's citizens had been given a grant from Julius Caesar (see note 3 at Acts 11:28, p. 639) that made them Roman citizens. It is supposed that this is how Paul's father became a Roman although it is possible it could have been granted him personally for some meritorious service or he could have bought it as this centurion did.
