And the chief captain answered, With a great sum obtained I this freedom. And Paul said, But I was [free] born.

Note 2 at Ac 22:28: Paul was born in Tarsus (see note 3 at Ac 9:11) of Cilicia (see note 5 at Ac 6:9). Tarsus and all its citizens had been given a grant from Julius Caesar (see note 3 at Ac 11:28) that made them Roman citizens. It is supposed that this is how Paul's father became a Roman, although it could possibly have been granted to him personally for some meritorious service or he could have bought it like this centurion did.
