Then said Paul, I wist not, brethren, that he was the high priest: for it is written, Thou shalt not speak evil of the ruler of thy people.

Note 3 at Acts 23:5: Paul was not aware that Ananias was the high priest when he spoke this scathing prophecy against him. When apprised of the situation, he softened out of respect for the office that Ananias held but there is no indication that he withdrew his judgment of Ananias. Indeed, Ananias was smitten by God in just a few short years (see note 2 at v. 2).
