But when Paul had appealed to be reserved unto the hearing of Augustus, I commanded him to be kept till I might send him to Caesar.
Note 3 at Acts 25:21: The name Augustus meant "venerable or august" and was a title for the Roman emperors much as the title Caesar (see note 1 at Lk. 2:1, p. 52). It was first conferred on Caius Octavius Caesar in B.C. 27 and he became commonly know as Augustus Caesar (see note 3 at Acts 11:28, p. 639). After his death, the title Augustus continued to be used of the succeeding Roman emperors. The Caesar being referred to here was Nero, who is not mentioned by name in scripture except in the subscript of 2 Timothy. He is referred to however in Acts 17:7; 25:8, 10-12, 21; 26:32; 27:24; 28:19; Phil. 4:22.
