Howbeit they looked when he should have swollen, or fallen down dead suddenly: but after they had looked a great while, and saw no harm come to him, they changed their minds, and said that he was a god.

Note 7 at Ac 28:6: What a difference! This illustrates how impossible it is to discern what God is doing based on circumstances. These people vacillated from one extreme to the other in just a matter of minutes because they were judging carnally (Jas 1:8).
