Colossians 1:17
Previous Verse
Colossians 1:17
Next Verse

And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

Note 9 at Col. 1:17: Christ is the One through whom all things were made (Jn. 1:3; 1 Cor. 8:6; Eph. 3:9; Heb. 1:1, 2). He is also the One by whom all things continue to exist (Acts 17:28; Heb. 1:3).

In the New World Translation, the Bible used by the Jehovah's Witnesses, this verse is translated as: "...he is before all [other] things and by means of him all [other] things were made to exist." This is an attempt to prove that Jesus was himself created and then used as an agent to bring forth the remaining creation. The word "other" is deliberately inserted twice in the New World Translation which totally changes the meaning of the whole text. Scholars have exposed this dishonest rendering, as any Greek text will show that no such word as "other" appears in the Greek.

This is an attempt by men to put Christ on the level of created things. What the scripture is really saying is that Jesus Christ (the Word-Jn. 1:1) was before creation and that through Him all creation was brought forth and now exists.
