Colossians 4:10 |
Next Verse |
Aristarchus my fellowprisoner saluteth you, and Marcus, sister's son to Barnabas, (touching whom ye received commandments: if he come unto you, receive him;)
Note 4 at Col. 4:10: Aristarchus was from Thessalonica (Acts 27:2), and was with Paul on his third missionary journey (Acts 19:29; 20:4). Aristarchus, along with Gaius (see note 4 at Acts 19:29, p. 692), was seized by the mob in Ephesus because they had been seen with the apostle Paul. He apparently survived this ordeal since he was a constant companion in the later part of Paul's life. Being a fellow prisoner with Paul may have meant that he was incarcerated with Paul for preaching the gospel.
Tradition says that Aristarchus died as a martyr during Nero's persecution of Christians.
Note 5 at Col. 4:10: John Mark was a cousin to Barnabas and accompanied Paul and Barnabas on their first missionary journey (Acts 12:25). Most scholars think Mark may have been an associate to the apostle Peter and was with Peter in Rome at the time of Peter's death. Tradition states that Mark also died a martyr's death and was the first bishop of Alexandria. See ref. o at this verse for other footnotes about John Mark.
