Next Verse |
Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.
Note 24 at Eph. 1:14: The dictionary defines "earnest" as being: (1) money paid in advance as part payment to bind a contract or bargain (also called "earnest money"); (2) a token of something to come; a promise or assurance, a pledge or guarantee. The Holy Spirit in the life of the believer is the pledge, guarantee, promise, and assurance that we shall enter into our inheritance with all its benefits. See ref. v at this verse for more notes on the Holy Spirit being our earnest.
Note 25 at Eph. 1:14: Our glorified body has been purchased through the sacrificial payment of Jesus, but it is not yet redeemed. That may shock some people who equate redemption with salvation. However, there is a difference between the two. Redemption is salvation completed (see note 11 at Rom. 8:23, p. 800).
Salvation begins with the born-again (see note 2 at Jn. 3:3, p. 92) experience but it will not be completed until we receive our glorified body and assume our position in eternity with Christ. Paul is saying that until we see that glorified body, the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit is our guarantee that the rest of our salvation is secure and coming.
