(Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?
Note 14 at Eph. 4:9: This phrase, "the lower parts of the earth" is referring to the place in the center of the earth where all the spirits of people who died went prior to the sacrifice of Jesus. The Hebrew word for this place was "sheol" (see note 12 at v. 8, above).
