This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.

Note 20 at Eph. 5:32: In this verse Paul compares the marriage union between a man and woman to the relationship that He Himself has with us, His people. Marriage is a small scale model of what an enduring and lasting relationship with Christ should be. And our union with Christ is the supreme example of what a marriage should be.
