Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are [these]; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
Note 14 at Gal. 5:19: Paul is now giving a clearly defined standard to show whether a person is being led by the Holy Spirit or the flesh. If a person is walking after the flesh he will manifest to some degree the works of the flesh.
Paul categorizes these actions in four areas: (1) sensual results: fornication or prostitution; uncleanness, meaning moral impurity (including homosexuality-see Precepts Magazine, Dec. 1992, Bob Yandian; see notes 3-4 at Rom. 1:26-27, p. 746; see note 3 at 1 Cor. 6:9, p. 885) and lasciviousness, which deals with promiscuity such as pre-marital, extramarital sexual relationships and things of that nature; (2) false worship: idolatry and sorcery or witchcraft; (3) personal and social relations: hatred (meaning personal animosities-see ref. l at v. 20, p. 1084), variance (meaning strife, rivalry and discord-see ref. m at v. 20, p. 1084), emulations (meaning jealousies of an unnatural kind-see ref. n at v. 20, p. 1084), wrath (see ref. o at v. 20, p. 1084), strife (factions, division within the body-see ref. p at v. 20, p. 1084), seditions (divisions among individuals and between married couples-see ref. q at v. 20, p. 1084), heresies (see ref. r at v. 20, p. 1084), envyings (see ref. s at v. 21, p. 1084). These are personal and social results of walking in the flesh. (4) Category four is intemperance, categorized by drunkenness and by revelings or orgies (see refs. u-v at v. 21, p. 1084).
