John 1:38
Previous Verse
John 1:38
Next Verse

Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou?

Note 2 at Jn. 1:38: "Rabbi" primarily meant "master," although it could sometimes be used to denote "doctor" or "teacher." All of the ruling class of the Pharisees were called by this title, and it became a very vain thing for them (Mt. 23:8). They used the term to signify fatherhood or authority; Jesus denounced this use (see note 4 at Mt. 23:8. p. 387) saying that God alone held that position.
