Next Verse |
He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.
Note 5 at Jn. 1:41: "Messias" is a Hebrew word whose Greek counterpart is "Christos" or "Christ" and means "anointed one." This term was applied to prophets and kings (Ps. 105:15; Isa. 45:1), but through prophecy, it took on the singular meaning of the expected Savior of Israel, even as "the son of David" became a term signifying the particular son of David who was to have the everlasting kingdom (Isa.9:7).
