Note 2 at Joh 1:45: Nathanael means "given of God" (Strong's Concordance). Nathanael is only mentioned six times in Scripture with five of those instances being in this narrative. The only other mention of him is in Joh 21:2 where it says he went fishing with Peter and saw Jesus in His glorified body. That passage also tells us that he was from Cana in Galilee, where Jesus turned the water into wine. Because of the listing of Bartholomew with Philip in the list of apostles (Mt 10:3, Mr 3:18, and Lu 6:14), it is usually thought that Bartholomew was Nathanael's surname.
