Next Verse |
Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.
Note 4 at Jn. 2:4: "Woman" was a common way of addressing the females of Jesus' day and was used in the way we would use "Madam." It was not a term of disrespect (cp. with Mt. 15:28; Jn. 4:21; 19:26; 20:15). However, it was not an affectionate or intimate term as might be expected from a son. Jesus may have addressed her this way to serve as a reminder that He was now operating in His Messianic role, and as an ending to His silent submission, so that He could be about His Father's business (Lk. 2:49-51). His continuing words, "what have I to do with thee," by any standards must be interpreted as a mild rebuke. Apparently, Jesus was not disposed, at least not yet, to turn the water into wine because His hour was not yet come.
