John 2:4
Previous Verse
John 2:4
Next Verse

Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.

Note 4 at Joh 2:4: "Woman" was a common way of addressing the females of Jesus' day and was used in the way we would use "Madam." It was not a term of disrespect (compare with Mt 15:28; Joh 4:21, 19:26, and 20:15). However, it was not an affectionate or intimate term, as might be expected from a son. Jesus may have addressed her this way to serve as a reminder that He was now operating in His Messianic role and as an ending to His silent submission so that He could be about His Father's business (Lu 2:49-51). His continuing words, "what have I to do with thee," must be interpreted as a mild rebuke by any standards. Apparently, Jesus was not disposed, at least not yet, to turn the water into wine, because His hour was not yet come.
