John 3:36 |
Next Verse |
He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.
Note 3 at Joh 3:36: Eternal life is something that all born-again believers possess. It doesn't take place in the future but is a present reality. Joh 5:24 says, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life." Scriptural salvation is a reality that we can know we've experienced (1Jo 5:13, see note 94 at Joh 17:3).
Note 4 at Joh 3:36: A future time is coming when God will pour out His wrath on all the earth (Re 6:17; 11:18; 14:19; 15:1, 7; 16:1, 19; and 19:15). However, in this present age, Jesus has come not to condemn people but to bring them grace and truth (Joh 1:14 and 3:17). Those who do not believe on the Son are presently under the wrath of the Old Testament Law (Joh 5:45, Ro 4:15, and Ga 3:10; see note 11 at Joh 3:18) and, unless they repent, will suffer the wrath of God eternally (Ro 2:6-9 and Re 20:13-15).
