John 5:19
Previous Verse
John 5:19
Next Verse

Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.

Note 4 at Jn. 5:19: Some people have mistakenly taken this statement to mean that Jesus was not claiming deity. However, taken in context, it is obvious that Jesus was rather stating His complete unity with the Father (Jn. 10:30). We can do nothing of ourselves (Jn. 15:5) because we are powerless. That was not the case with Jesus. He could do nothing of Himself because of His complete unity with the Father. One part of the Godhead does not operate independently of the others.
