John 5:31 |
Next Verse |
If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.
Note 17 at Jn. 5:31: This is a reference back to the law of Deuteronomy 17:6 where it took the testimony of two or three witnesses to establish anything legally. Any testimony Jesus gave of Himself would, of course, be the truth (Jn. 8:14), but He is simply saying that to be accepted by others as being accurate, He needed the testimony of someone else to bear witness to who He is. Then, He proceeds to use John's witness (v. 32) and the miracles that He had done (v. 36) as well as the Father's testimony (v. 37).
