(Howbeit there came other boats from Tiberias nigh unto the place where they did eat bread, after that the Lord had given thanks:)
Note 1 at Joh 6:23: Tiberias is a city on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee eleven and one-half miles southwest of where the Jordan River enters the sea and six miles northwest of where it exits. It was built by Herod the Tetrarch (see note 1 at Lu 3:1) and named after Tiberius Caesar, the then-reigning emperor. Tiberias was regarded by the Jews as one of four sacred cities, the others being Jerusalem, Hebron, and Safed. After the destruction of Jerusalem in A.D. 70 and the Jews' expulsion from Judea, Tiberias became the center of Jewish commerce and learning, and the Sanhedrin was moved there around A.D. 150. The city still exists today and is also known by the name Tverya.
