Next Verse

(Howbeit there came other boats from Tiberias nigh unto the place where they did eat bread, after that the Lord had given thanks:)

Note 1 at Jn. 6:23: Tiberias was a city on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee 11* miles southwest of where the Jordan River entered the sea and six miles northwest of where it exited. It was built by Herod the Tetrarch (see note 1 at Lk. 3:1, p. 31) and named after Tiberius Caesar, the then reigning emperor. Tiberias was regarded by the Jews as one of four sacred cities, the others being Jerusalem, Hebron, and Safed. After the destruction of Jerusalem in A.D. 70 and the Jews' expulsion from Judaea, Tiberias became the center of Jewish commerce and learning, and the Sanhedrin was moved there around A.D. 150. The city still exists today although it is known by the name "Tubariya."
