Next Verse

Hath not the scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was?

Note 12 at Jn. 7:42: Jesus was born of the seed of David in the town of Bethlehem; however, Jesus is never mentioned countering His critics with this revelation. Judging by Nicodemus' lack of response to the Pharisee's question about this very thing (v. 52), it is evident that many of Jesus' followers were also not aware of His birth in Bethlehem. There is no explanation in scripture of why Jesus remained silent about this issue. Once again, we see that their logic wasn't wrong but that they had based it on assumptions which were regarded by most as true when they were not (see note 7 at Jn. 6:42, p. 184). A casual consideration of the claims of Jesus may cause a person to make a similar mistake in judgment. However, when someone seeks to know the truth about Jesus with his whole heart (Jer. 29:13), he will find (Mt. 7:7-8) the truth (Jn. 14:6).
