Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, [then] are ye my disciples indeed;
Note 8 at Joh 8:31: The Greek word interpreted as "disciples" in this verse is "MATHETES," and it means "a learner...indicating thought accompanied by endeavor" (Vine's Expository Dictionary). Jesus had more than twelve disciples (see note 1 at Mr 3:14), and the statements made in these verses are intended for anyone who wants to be a follower of Jesus. True Bible faith in Jesus produces salvation, but being a "disciple indeed" comes only through a maturing in the knowledge of and action on the Word of God.
